Travis Scott Reaches Settlement After Astroworld Tragedy

Earlier this week, Live Nation settled with nearly 100 victims related to Travis Scott‘s Astroworld Festival tragedy ahead of a scheduled court date.

According to the Dallas Morning News, the settlements come days ahead of the set trial. The outlet reported Scott, Live Nation, and venue operator SMG, a division of ASM Global Parent Inc., were due to stand trial Tuesday (Oct. 22) involving three bellwether plaintiffs.

Scott, Live Nation, and venue operator SMG (a division of ASM Global Parent Inc.) faced trial centered on three selected plaintiffs whose injuries range from a collapsed lung to emotional distress. These bellwether plaintiffs were chosen to lead the way in court from among hundreds of individuals pursuing personal injury claims, setting the stage for future cases in this high-profile legal process. The settlement was agreed to after the Texas Supreme Court denied a petition from Live Nation in an attempt to prevent the deposition of its CEO, Michael Rapino.

Two plaintiffs, Angel Dominguez and Elizabeth Martinez, reached confidential settlement agreements on Friday with Live Nation and Scott, whose full name is Jacques Bermon Webster II, attorneys for Martinez confirmed to The Texas Lawbook. The third plaintiff, Henry Nguyen, who also lodged claims against SMG, will have his trial rescheduled, according to court documents.

According to the outlet, the settlements resolved the claims of about 100 of nearly 1000 plaintiffs.

Lawyers for Nguyen, Dominguez and the defendants did not respond to requests for comment. Hundreds more plaintiffs who allege injuries from the concert are waiting for their trials.

Ten people died of compressive asphyxiation as the crowd surged toward the stage, squeezing people so tightly they could not breathe. The youngest victim was 9-year-old boy Ezra Blount. The families of the deceased have settled their lawsuits. The number of tickets Scott and the venue operators sold exceeded the venue’s capacity, the lawsuits allege.
