Serena Williams has gone from the tennis court to the basketball court as she is now a team owner in the WNBA. Williams will be part of the expansion franchise Toronto Tempo as a minority owner, according to the team.
In a statement, Serena said that she was "thrilled" to announce that she was joining the team's ownership.
"This moment is not just about basketball; it is about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes," Williams said in the statement. "I have always said that women’s sports are an incredible investment opportunity. I am excited to partner with Larry and all of Canada in creating this new WNBA franchise and legacy."
The expansion franchise is scheduled to debut in 2026. The Tempo was announced as the WNBA's 14th team, and its first international expansion team, in December. The WNBA will expand to 13 teams this season.
Her role will include merchandise collaborations and jersey designs. Williams already owns stakes in the Miami Dolphins, Angel City FC and Los Angeles Golf Club.
