Hip-Hop icon Roxanne Shanté has made history over the weekend as the first solo female MC to be honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. On Tuesday, Jan. 28, the rapper was announced as a recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement class along with Dr. Bobby Jones, Prince, and more.
Shanté was given the award during the Special Merit Awards Ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 1.
She took the world by storm in the 1980’s with her 1984 song “Roxanne’s Revenge”, which was an answer to UTFO’s hit song “Roxanne, Roxanne”. Her answer to the song is recognized by dozens as Hip Hop’s first diss record.
Shanté appeared on “CBS Mornings” to sit down with Gayle King about her battle rap origins, which began when she was 14. Shanté, whose upbringing was recounted in the Netflix biopic “Roxanne Roxanne,” also explained her transition from the music industry.
