According to TMZ, R. Kelly's lawyers are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn his multiple child sex convictions. TMZ reported on Tuesday, July 30, that the singer, whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, had his lawyer appear on 'TMZ Live' to discuss Kelly's SCOTUS filing.
Kelly was convicted in a Chicago federal court on three counts of producing child pornography and three counts of enticing a minor to engage in sexual activity. Consequently, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison. In addition, he has been convicted in New York for sex trafficking and racketeering.
He is expected to be released in 2045, after serving 19 years of the two sentences concurrently. The R&B singer’s lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, argued that the PROTECT Act’s 2003 launch date means that her client’s actions in the previous decade shouldn’t fall under his misconduct that happened decades ago.
The PROTECT Act took away statutes of limitations for abduction and abuse cases that involved children when then President George W. Bush, signed it into law in April of that year. Bonjean said statutes of limitations should still apply.
TMZ says the high court will decide in the next few months whether to hear R. Kelly’s appeal.
