Portsmouth, Virginia is honoring one of their very own, Missy Elliott.
The local city council voted unanimously to give the rap icon her own street. A portion of McLean St. will be renamed Missy Elliott boulevard. The name changes aims to promote the city's entertainment district while honoring the rap icon.
A family friend of Elliott's, Erin Carter proposed the name change and had some pretty nice things to say about Missy at a city council meeting.
We don’t do a good job recognizing our own heroes that’s right here from Portsmouth,” Carter said during Tuesday’s city council meeting. “Growing up I learned that this same girl who’s received all these awards, performed at the White House…she grew up right here in our city of Portsmouth. Children shouldn’t have to look to another city to see greatness, because greatness resides in Portsmouth.
Missy has always been vocal about her love for her hometown and took to social media to celebrate and give Erin a shout out.
