"My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day," the Grammy-winning singer, 55, said in an exclusive statement to People.

"I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed," adds Mariah. "I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time."

No additional details, including the causes of death for Patricia and Alison, are known at this time.

Patricia, formerly married to Alfred Roy Carey, was a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach before the couple had their children: Alison, Mariah, and Morgan. The parents divorced when the "Emotions" singer was three years old. Mariah's relationship with her mother—who passed on her vocal talents—remained complicated throughout her life.

“Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It’s never been only black-and-white — it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions,” Carey wrote in the book. “Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s.”

Carey maintained contact with her mother and even recorded a duet of “O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus” for the singer’s second Christmas album in 2010.

In a lawsuit filed in New York, Alison Carey alleged that her younger sister used her book as a tool to "humiliate and embarrass" her, according to a complaint obtained by CNN. Online court records indicate that Mariah Carey did not file a legal response to the allegation. Mariah Carey is one of three siblings, with Alison Carey and Morgan Carey as her brother, all children of their mother, Patricia Carey.
