Lupita Nyong'o Becomes Newest Chanel Ambassador

The acclaimed actress joins Whitney Peak, Margot Robbie, Riley Keough, Charlotte Casiraghi, and Kristen Stewart as Chanel ambassadors.

“It’s a great honor,” the 41-year-old expressed to the Associated Press. “Chanel is a legacy brand with a long history. And to be the newest face of it feels monumental. I feel very, very proud and excited to take this new journey with a brand that I think is dynamic and always feminine and regal.”

The actress went on to share with the outlet how she drew inspiration from a documentary about Bethann Hardison, a trailblazing model and activist who championed diversity in the fashion industry during the 1960s and 1970s. She rose to fame after participation in the groundbreaking 1973 Battle of Versailles fashion show, becoming one of the first widely recognized Black models.

“I would hope that there is a message for little girls,” she said. “My work as an actor and as an author, as a podcast maker, and now as a brand ambassador, is to change that by just occupying the space.” It is a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of representation; when someone finally occupies a space that was once empty, it changes the way people see themselves and the world around them.

Nyong'o shared that Chanel has invited her to their events over the years and "treated her with great care." The Marvel star expressed her gratitude to the brand, recalling how "very honored" she felt when they asked her to become an ambassador. "Of course, this is an iconic brand, a legacy brand with a rich history, and I'm both happy and proud to contribute to that legacy," she stated.

On-screen, Nyong’o most recently voiced the lead character in DreamWorks Animation’s feature film The Wild Robot, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 8, 2024, and was released in theaters in the United States on Sept. 27, 2024.
