It's A Serious Matter: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc Welcomes 8 New Honorary Members

AKA has just inducted some powerhouse women in the world of sports, entertainment and business.

The newest members of the sisterhood are: actress and Golden Globe winner Tracee Ellis Ross, Tony, Grammy and Emmy awarding winning actress and singer Cynthia Erivo, Oscar winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter, Women's Basketball Hall of Famer Lisa Leslie, Pulitzer Prize winning author Alice Walker, dynamic television and film producer Debra Martin-Chase, groundbreaking businesswoman and CEO Ursula M. Burns and extraordinary journalist/broadcaster Robin Roberts.


The sorority made the announcement during their 69TH annual Boule/Leadership Seminar. The women took part in formal, in-person inductions in separate ceremonies across the country led by President/CEO, Dr. Glenda Glover.


"I am honored to welcome these extraordinary women into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority," said Glover. "Each of these luminaries has reached the pinnacle of success in her respective field and sphere of influence. They are recognized and celebrated around the world and epitomize greatness."


She goes on to say, "Since our founding in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha women have been history makers and standard bearers. Our newest members are writing a new chapter in our long and distinguished history. The induction of our newest honorary members will ensure that we continue to shine our light on the extraordinary accomplishments of Black women."


The latest honorary members join previously inducted honorary members including Coretta Scott King, Maya Angelou, Jada Pinkett Smith and Alicia Keys.


Alpha Kappa Alpha is the oldest black sorority in the United States. Today, the international sisterhood is comprised of more than 300,000 women.
