Issa Rae Continues to Reign: Can't Stop, Won't Stop

Well known for her many successful ventures, it is no surprise that Issa Rae continues to stay relevant. For the past few weeks, she has been a continuous trending topic surrounding press for her latest movie One Of Them Days.

Issa Rae, 40, has been in the entertainment business for many years prior to her Emmy award winning series Insecure. Her noteworthy work ethic has been admirable from the start, and fortunately for us, she's nowhere near finished.

I had the pleasure of attending a sold-out sit-down event held at the Hobby Center in Houston last week, where Issa intimately answered an array of questions her supporters have been itching to know. Plenty was spilled about the hardships faced, internal and external, to get to the peak she is now. She also spoke about the passion to bring her ideas and culture to not only the big screen, but through food and other experiences. Issa even passed advice along to attendees who had questions that ran deeper than the surface.

During the event, you'd learn that Issa has been chasing these accolades for many years, never expecting to go as big as she has. Her entrepreneurial spirit has proven she was meant for success such as this. I believe that her projects have also been reflective of her own experiences, and supporters are eager for more material. I also think it's funny how the crowd alluded to wanting an Insecure movie adaptation, but Issa confessed that she felt like those chapters were finished, on the screen and in real life.

The event was an experimental run ahead of another showing that'll take place in D.C. "I'm just grateful that people want to come and see what it is, and it's something that we're shaping. We're doing another one in D.C. but it's just always fun to meet the people who've been supporting me for a very long time,” Rae said. Overall, her stance on solidarity in the Black community continues to be apparent and intentional. "It's so important for us just to continue to band together. I appreciate that the most because at the end of the day, we're all we have, and we have to remember that."

One of Them Days, produced by TriStar Pictures in association with Hoorae Media, grossed $14 million during MLK weekend. The film stars the beloved ladies actress Keke Palmer and singer-songwriter SZA. An article written by box office editor Anthony D'Alessandro on Deadline Hollywood states that Sony may have possibly lacked effort in marketing the new film, considering the whopping number of 116.6 million impressions received across social media platforms. And while it seems as though there is always a downfall being counted on, we know that our village is mighty. Although it seems numbers could have performed better, the ratings have continued to exceed expectations for the general consensus.

Promotion for the movie amongst the three stars has also been a sight to see. Issa Rae, Keke Palmer, and SZA teamed up to see who could stand the hottest wings in a Hot Ones Versus. In this version, they asked each other personal questions and could choose to either answer, or opt out by eating a wing. It's obvious the trio's chemistry is magnetic, and it's exciting to see where this movie will lead them.

You can catch One of Them Days in theaters all over. I think it's important to support each other now more than ever. While I have not seen the film yet myself, I think it goes without saying the theme overall is to endorse each other. Issa did say she was rooting for everybody black, and I think it's wise for our community to follow suit. This movie is just another example of the solidarity that continues to reign supreme above all odds and adversities against us.
