"Insecure" Faces Backlash of Character's AKA Portrayal

The debut episode of the 5th and final season of Issa Rae's hit show Insecure One of the core characters, Tiffany was portrayed as a member of the Black greek sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha.

Members of AKA and other members of the Divine 9 were shocked and a bit enraged when Tiffany wore official greek paraphernalia.

Issa, Molly, Kelly and Tiffany travel back to their alma mater Stanford University. Amanda Seales plays Tiffany. As soon as Tiffany walked out in her pink and green Gucci dress, there was no doubt which sorority she was representing.

Now, that's not the issue. It is known that throughout the series, Molly and Tiffany are AKAs. This has been highlighted either by carefully placed props and verbally.

This time, Tiffany wore an official AKA cardigan complete with the sorority's trademarked seal. Though it was quick, like the blink of an eye, it still was able to catch the audience's attention.

AKA sorority members took to Twitter saying their organization was being repped by an actress with no affiliation to their sisterhood and saw it as disrespectful.

Amanda Seales responded to the backlash by saying she's simply playing a role.

“I’m not a soror. Tiffany is a soror. Tiffany is a character on a TV show,” she responded on IG Live. “I didn’t write the character. I play the character. I’m not a soror. I’m an actress, and I’m playing a character on a TV show.”

Issa Rae also responded to the controversy on Twitter:

“Oh sh**, let me tell [HBO] to delete the one of the upcoming episodes then, hold on.”

As of now, we're unaware if the show got permission from the sorority to wear official paraphernalia. AKA's corporate office has not yet released a statement.
