This Black History Month is creating black history everywhere! Nearly 3 years after she was cast as the understudy in the Broadway musical Wicked, Brittney Johnson has been upgraded.
On Monday, she gave her first performance as Glinda and became the first Black woman to play a lead role in a Broadway musical full time.
She received a standing ovation when she entered the stage and when the play was over. Brittany took to IG to express her gratitude and what this truly means....
I am so humbled to be the first Black Glinda and honored to fulfill the hopes and dreams of many...”The importance of this moment in history is only amplified by the message of this beautiful show: Love, friendship, and kindness are stronger than the fear of ‘otherness.’ Love can break down barriers to change the world. I’m so grateful to the Wicked team for trusting me to tell this story. My hope and prayer is that people see my story and have faith that they can achieve their dreams too. Nothing is impossible! And no dream is too big.”
Brittney will perform as Glinda "The Good Witch" 8 times a week at the Gershwin Theater.
